How to Measure Outdoor Ottoman Cushions

Outdoor ottomans may seem simple, but accurate measurements can make all the difference between a cushion that fits perfectly and one that shifts around, leaves unwanted gaps, or looks too bulky. Whether you’re replacing a worn-out cushion or ordering a custom one, this guide will explain exactly what to measure and which details are most important.

Unlike deep seating or dining chairs, ottomans don’t have a backrest to help keep the cushion in place. Because of this, getting the width, depth, thickness, and tie placement right is especially important for a secure, comfortable, and properly fitted cushion.

 

 

Measure the Ottoman Frame — Not Just the Old Cushion

Always measure the ottoman frame first, even if you still have the original cushion. The frame provides the most accurate dimensions for creating a properly fitted replacement.

Be sure to measure:

  • Width (side to side): Measure from one outer edge to the other across the usable seating area.

  • Depth (front to back): Measure across the flat top surface from front to back.

  • Corner shape:: Note whether the corners are: square, rounded, or slightly curved.

  • Lip or inset: Check whether the cushion rests inside a recessed area or frame lip.

Record all measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch.

Important:

Old cushions can change shape over time. They may:

  • Become compressed from regular use

  • Lose their original shape

  • Shrink slightly after years of outdoor exposure

The frame gives you the most reliable measurements. The old cushion should be used only as a reference.

 

 

Measure the Cushion Thickness

Ottoman cushions typically range from 3" to 6" thick, depending on the ottoman’s design and how it will be used.

Before choosing the thickness, consider:

  • Is the ottoman intended mainly as a footrest?

  • Will it also be used as extra seating?

  • Should the cushion height match or align with the seat height of a nearby chair or sofa?

How to Measure:

  • Replacing an existing cushion: Measure the cushion’s thickness when it is not compressed. Avoid measuring while someone is sitting or pressing on it.

  • Creating a new cushion: Consider the height of the surrounding furniture and choose a thickness that provides a comfortable, balanced seating height.

The right thickness helps ensure the finished cushion looks proportional and feels comfortable without making the ottoman too high or too low.

 

 

Check the Corner Style

Ottomans can come in a variety of shapes, so identifying the corner style is important for getting the cushion shape right.

Common ottoman designs include:

  • Square corners

  • Rounded front corners

  • Fully rounded corners

  • Slightly trapezoidal shapes


If the Corners Are Rounded:

Be sure to measure:

  • The length of the straight section before the curve begins

  • The radius of the curve, if it can be clearly determined

Not Sure How to Measure the Shape?

For unusually shaped ottomans, creating a paper template can be an excellent way to capture the exact outline. This is especially helpful for custom cushions with curves, angled sides, or other unique shapes.

 

 

Check the Tie Location — Very Important for Ottomans

Many ottoman cushions do not have visible ties, but some designs require them to keep the cushion securely in place.

Common tie locations include:

  • Back edge — especially when the ottoman is positioned against a chair

  • Side edges

  • Underside of the ottoman — a common option for metal-frame styles

Because ottomans do not have a backrest to help hold the cushion in place, ties are often attached to the bottom frame rails to help prevent the cushion from sliding.

  • Specific tie locations

Consider Special Ottoman Designs

Some ottomans have unique construction that requires a few additional measurements or considerations.

Recessed or Drop-In Ottomans

If the cushion fits inside an opening in the frame, measure the inside dimensions of the opening rather than the outside dimensions of the frame. These measurements will determine how the cushion should fit within the recessed area.

Slatted or Open-Frame Ottomans

If the top of the ottoman has slats, bars, or open spaces:

  • Measure the full usable surface area where the cushion will sit.

  • Consider adding ties if additional stability is needed.

Storage Ottomans

For ottomans with a lift-up or hinged top:

  • Make sure the cushion thickness will not interfere with the hinges or opening mechanism.

  • Consider the overall weight of the foam and cushion, especially if the storage compartment will be opened frequently.

  • The finished cushion should be comfortable while still allowing the lid to lift easily.

 

 

Avoid these common errors when measuring:

  • Measuring only the old cushion instead of the frame

  • Forgetting to account for rounded or curved corners

  • Failing to determine whether ties are needed

  • Choosing a cushion that is too thick, which can affect seat height and alignment

  • Ignoring the inside dimensions of a recessed frame
